Shomies in Action Coordinator
Sifiso Cele Like most people in the organisation, Sifiso Cele started off as a mentor but is now in charge of the Shomies in Action program. The aim of this project is to effect positive and healthy lifestyle changes amongst young people through mentoring.

Sifiso Cele mentors young people in the UThungulu District. The children are taught about the importance of taking good care of themselves. During the mentoring sessions 10 important factors are brought forward which the children are made aware of. These are:

  • HIV/Aids
  • Gender Based Violence(GBV)
  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Relationships & Sexuality
  • Adolescence & Teenage Pregnancy
  • Friendship
  • Counselling Skills
  • Planning Awareness Campaign

Child Care SA saw the need for this particular programme because they saw that many teenagers get pregnant at a very young age as a result of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Research has also shown that in these incidences, children also contract aids because they do not know of ways to protect themselves during intercourse.

Sifiso says “working at Child Care SA ultimately helped me as much as it helped the youth in schools. It has made me look at life differently”.
